Noël sur Mars
Une microfiction par A.B. Alabee
C’était au tour de mon équipage de célébrer Noël sur Mars. Célébrer n’est pas nécessairement le bon mot. Nous avions six mois pour terminer notre mission et Noël coïncidait avec le jour 181. Alan, Teresa et moi allions procéder aux inspections finales, avant de déguster le vin épicé - sans vin, le lait de poule qui n’avait pas vu d’œuf ou d’alcool et le merveilleux et parfaitement desséché dîner de dinde avec toutes les garnitures.
Eh bien, j’aurais apprécié tout cela si cette lumière scintillante ne nous avait pas attirés dans le biodôme. Alors que je m’approchais du champ de blé, un nuage de créatures qui ressemblaient à des vers luisants s’éleva du sol martien. Certaines d’entre elles atterrirent sur mon costume. J’étais subjuguée par le spectacle de lumière, rien d’autre n’existait. La paix remplissait mon esprit. Libre, je flottais, en apesanteur.
L’émerveillement se termina abruptement lorsque je m’écrasai dans l’un des pins de la zone forestière. Désorientée, j’ai cligné des paupières plusieurs fois en regardant les branches enneigées. Deux petites formes humaines, en costume d’astronaute, pendaient à proximité. J’ai plissé les yeux pour décrypter l’écriture sur leur poitrine. Le nom de Teresa Keller m’apparut et j’étouffai un hoquet de stupeur. J’ai aussitôt vérifié l’identité de l’autre individu : Alan Pearson.
Alors que je les appelais, une voix profonde répondit : « Joyeux Noël Dana. Je me demandais quand l’un d’entre vous, les envahisseurs, nous remarquerait enfin. »

Christmas on Mars

It was my crew’s turn to celebrate Christmas on Mars. Celebrate might be pushing it. We had six months to complete our mission and Christmas was on day 181. Alan, Teresa and I were setting out to proceed with the final inspections, then we would enjoy the wine-free mulled wine, the eggnog that hadn’t seen any eggs or alcohol and the wonderful and perfectly desiccated turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Well, I would have enjoyed all this if that twinkling light hadn’t lured me back into the biodome. As I approached the wheat field, a cloud of glow worm-like creatures rose from the Martian soil. Some of them landed on my suit. I was transfixed by the light show, nothing else existed. Peace filled my mind. I was floating away, weightless and free.
The wonder abruptly ended when I crashed into one of the pines in the forest zone. Confused, I blinked many times as I stared at the snow-covered branches. Two small human shapes were dangling nearby like precious white ornaments. I squinted then gasped when the name of Teresa Keller came into focus. I checked the other one: Alan Pearson.
I called them but a deep rumbling voice answered: ‘Merry Christmas Dana. I was wondering when one of you, invaders, would finally notice us.’
