The new life begins
The Crystal City, Kar Autik 5, 580
We arrived in the Crystal City just before midday and since then I’ve been walking in a daze. When Matika came to pick me up, she asked Codina to stay with me to develop my flovian skills. She accepted right away, yet her smile, and mine dropped when Telios stifled a sigh of sorrow. My heart sank as I realized she was sacrificing the love of her life for me, but Aunt Akali found the solution. She married them in the middle of the forest during a simple ceremony when they exchanged their promises. I am doubly fortunate since I will also learn the Ingebassian fighting techniques with Telios.
I’m so glad Matika managed to convince Aunt Akali to let me go with the Elfian people. They have known for years that the Guardian Child would complete her training in Elfiasud. Indeed, they invited me to study with them before Mama died… and again when I became the Guardian-Child. They were waiting for me; well aware I would never have decided to join them without the prophecy!
Before we parted from the delegation, Matika gave an amulet to Lydiana and her hair turned black. Curious and fascinated, I stood in front of my doppelganger as Matika explained it would trick anyone seeing her that I have left for Ingebas.
When I entered in the City, Matika guided me along corridors. My feet were sinking on the spongy floor and I couldn’t help but to stretch my hand to feel the luminescent walls as soft as the ground. We reached a vast dome where Elfian of all ages were travelling on floating platforms carrying them to any of the hundreds of alveoli. They all seemed loss in their thoughts, nodding and smiling. Slowly, the collective buzz was replaced by coherent speech: they were all greeting Matika and welcoming… me! Whereas my head was filled with words, my ears only heard the swoosh of the platforms crisscrossing. I was too stunned to ask what magic was operating such contraptions.
The ride to the top row of chambers left me dizzy. I stepped off with a sigh of relief and entered a cosy pod. A shimmering hammock was rocking in front of me. A glass desk – more like a deep shelf next to the door – was holding two piles of books. Near the opening at the back of the room, a plump chair made of the same soft material that covers all surfaces in the City seemed inviting – it is indeed so comfortable. On the other side of the back door, my bags were waiting for me to store my belonging in the wide oak chest, the only familiar piece of furniture in the room. Matika told me to put my satchel down and make myself at home.
As she turned to leave, I grabbed her sleeve. For a moment, I panic at the thought I would become a prisoner in this cell. The collective buzz stopped; Matika kneeled in front of me to say: “My sweet child, you’re a guest in the City and this alveolus has chosen you. It will care for you and provide what you need. The platform will come at your command. The City protects us and it creates the magic you will discover and learn to control as you explore it.” She made her way to the chair and beckoned me. Four steps later, I was leaning against the armrests and stared at my image reflected in her mirror eyes. My skin glowed the same green colour as the walls as she dangled a pendant in front of my face. The oxidized copper spiral was mesmerizing and before she could put a spell on me, I dashed to the door. With a soft swish, it closed.
I was trapped.
Bouncing out of reach, I crossed the cell to the back door and I ran into a dead end that looked a lot like a water room with a hand basin and a sunken cubicle. As I turned return to Matika, she hadn’t moved and the pendant was still dangling from her fingers. She was smiling, her thoughts filled me with peace. She explained the spiral is an amulet to help me change my appearance so no one will recognize me. Once I master the Guerkiel spell, I will be able to come out in the village and roam the mountains incognito. I wrinkled my nose – everyone knows I hate magic. Matika burst into a contagious laughter and suggested we had our first lesson. At that moment, I understood I needed to develop all my powers, even those I despised the most.
My first lesson wasn’t successful, but it ended with a delightful visit. The platform thumped against the open door. Rasha bounced in, followed by Telios and Codina holding hands. Rasha, my Elfian friend, welcomed me with an exuberance rarely shown by her peers. Her exhilarating thoughts made me dizzy and I almost collapsed. Matika coughed as Rasha grabbed me in a bear hug. My legs were so wobbly that we tumbled, landing near the water room’s door. As I was untangling from her embrace, she called me sister. I froze, confused and elated. I had left everyone behind; she was reminding me I wasn’t alone. When Telios tried to separate us, Rasha growled and showed her pointed teeth. I stepped between them to reassure Telios I was fine and to promise Rasha that no one would ever come between us.
The collective buzz has subsided a while ago and Rasha has just sent me her last thoughts to wish me good night. Yet, even if my hammock swings, a gentle lull, I can’t sleep. Matika has promised I will master the Guerkiel spell and change my appearance to transform into a mostly Elfian teenager everyone will know as Zordana, her granddaughter. Apparently, I won’t be able to change every feature… We’ll see. I can’t wait to learn everything I need to know.
Telios and Codina chose a sphere at the foot of one of the tall pine trees. I would like to live in the trees, but the City will keep me safe. Matika told me that my alveolus has never accepted anyone except Loudna. I guess the City wants me to find the Child Without a Prophecy.
End of the Prologue.
